Retainers

Custom retainers — removable or bonded — that hold your teeth in place after orthodontic treatment and prevent slow drift over the years.

Orthodontics

Without retainers, teeth shift back

Teeth want to move. Every set of teeth wants to drift toward the front of your mouth as you age — orthodontic treatment or not. Retainers prevent that drift after braces or aligners, and can also straighten minor shifts in patients who never had treatment.

We make Hawley (acrylic-and-wire), Essix (clear plastic) and bonded retainers depending on what's right for you.

Common questions

How often do I need to wear retainers?+

First 6 months after braces: 22 hours/day. After that: nights only, for life. Stop wearing them and teeth will shift over years.

How long do retainers last?+

Clear retainers: 1–3 years. Hawley retainers: 5–10 years. Bonded retainers: 5–10 years (they sometimes pop off and need re-cementing).

I lost my retainer — how fast can you replace it?+

If we have a scan on file: 5–7 days. If we need to re-scan: 7–10 days. Don't wait — teeth shift quickly.
