The reset button for gum disease
When pockets between your gums and teeth deepen past 4 mm, regular cleanings can't reach the tartar that's causing the problem. Scaling and root planing — sometimes called a deep cleaning — does.
It's done with local anaesthetic so you're comfortable. Most cases need 1–2 visits, after which we re-measure and most patients return to a normal recall schedule.

The benefits, plainly explained
Your treatment, step by step
Numb
Local anaesthetic for the section being treated.
Scaling
Ultrasonic and hand instruments remove tartar above and below the gumline.
Root planing
Rough spots on the root surface are smoothed so bacteria can't re-attach easily.
Reassess
Four to six weeks later we re-measure pocket depths to see if we need a second round.
Common questions
How long does it take?+
Usually 2 visits of 60–90 minutes each. We do one half of your mouth at a time so you're not totally numb.
Will it hurt afterwards?+
Mild soreness for 1–2 days is normal. Tylenol or Advil handles it. Sensitivity to cold is common for a couple of weeks.
What if it doesn't work?+
If pockets stay deep we add localized antibiotics or refer you to a periodontist for surgical options. Most cases don't need that.
