TMJ Treatment

Diagnosis and treatment for jaw pain, clicking, locking and tension headaches caused by jaw joint and muscle dysfunction.

Additional Care

Most jaw pain is fixable without surgery

TMJ (temporomandibular joint) problems show up as jaw clicking, jaw pain, ear pain, tension headaches or even teeth that feel sensitive for no obvious reason. The cause is usually muscle tension, clenching or joint inflammation.

Treatment starts conservatively: a custom night guard, jaw exercises, stress reduction, sometimes anti-inflammatories. Most patients see major improvement within weeks without ever needing more aggressive intervention.

What to expect

Your treatment, step by step

Jaw range of motion, joint palpation, muscle palpation and bite analysis.

2

Imaging if needed

Panoramic x-ray or CBCT scan to look at the joint structure.

3

Treatment plan

Usually a night guard, jaw exercises and habit changes (chewing, posture).

4

Reassess

6–8 weeks later to see what worked and adjust if needed.

Common questions

Why does my jaw click?+

Usually a small disc in the joint is displaced. Clicking on its own is often harmless. Clicking with pain or locking needs evaluation.

Will a night guard fix it?+

For most people, yes — at least the muscular component. Joint-level disc problems need more, but conservative treatment helps the majority of cases.

What about jaw surgery?+

Reserved for severe joint cases that don't respond to conservative care. The vast majority of TMJ patients never need surgery.
