What to Expect at Your First Visit to a Dental Clinic in Edmonton

By Capilano Mall Dental Team · Edmonton, AB

Starting your dental care journey is easier when you know exactly what to expect. At Capilano Mall Dental, we design first visits to be the least stressful part of your week and aim to provide a comfortable, patient-friendly atmosphere for all patients, including families, emergency cases and new visitors.

Plan to be with us for about an hour; there's no rush and we take the extra time to make sure all your questions are answered.

What Services Do We Offer?

We offer general, family, cosmetic, emergency, preventive, children's, restorative, CDCP, and NIHB dentistry at our Edmonton clinic to cover all your needs.

What Should You Bring to Your First Appointment?

Before your first visit, gather your medical history (including current medications), your dental insurance card or member number if you have insurance, a government-issued photo ID for new patients, any prior x-rays or records, and a list of questions or concerns you may have about your dental health.

If you're missing something on that list, don't worry, most of the time, we can work around it.

How Does Your Visit Start?

When you arrive, we greet you by name, offer water or coffee, and assist with any final paperwork on a tablet, no clipboards to juggle.

Before any dental work begins, we sit down for a relaxed conversation about your reason for visiting and any past dental experiences we should know about.

What Happens During the Exam and Cleaning?

Your first appointment usually includes a thorough examination of your teeth, gums, bite, jaw joint, and soft tissues, along with a review of your existing dental work.

We often take low-dose digital x-rays at the initial visit to check areas we can't see visually and catch hidden problems like cavities between teeth or issues with bone and jaw.

A dental cleaning is usually performed at your first appointment, using both ultrasonic and hand instruments to gently remove plaque and tartar above and below the gumline.

After your cleaning, we polish your teeth, floss between every tooth, and can provide a fluoride varnish if you want extra protection.

We measure the health of your gums at every cleaning and can catch gum disease early through pocket measurements.

What If You Have Questions or Concerns?

If you have questions or have felt discomfort, we encourage you to bring them up at your appointment so we can offer tailored answers and advice.

We share all the findings, using photos and x-rays, and explain any recommended treatment options, including a cost estimate and your insurance coverage before anything is booked.

How Does Billing and Payment Work?

If extensive treatment is needed, we discuss all your options and work out timing, costs, and payment plans, both in-house and with third-party financing, so you can spread payments over time if needed.

We bill most insurance plans directly, so you only pay your portion at checkout, no paperwork or chasing reimbursements.

We accept government programs such as the Canada Dental Care Plan (CDCP), NIHB, Alberta Child Health Benefit, and AISH, just bring your card and we'll take care of the rest.

What If You're Feeling Anxious?

If you're feeling anxious, let us know, we offer multiple sedation options, from laughing gas to oral and IV sedation, and work with you to find the approach that helps you feel comfortable.

What About Children's First Dental Visits?

For children, we use age-appropriate, gentle techniques like 'tell-show-do' and if they're very young, we may do the exam with them on a parent's lap to help them feel safe.

Every step for children is paced for them, never rushed, and our goal is to make the visit a positive experience, finishing with stickers, a new toothbrush, and a sense of accomplishment.
